emergency-lightsLAS YESCAS – Tragedy has struck a small community here after a Rio Hondo High School senior was killed over the weekend.

Michael Swartz of Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen confirmed that 18-year-old Ricky Ramos, Jr. died Sunday, December 30. Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said early Monday that Ramos had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

“We got a call to go to the 31900 block of Roberto St. in Las Yescas in response to a subject being shot,” Lucio said. “The individual had been shot accidently by a family member.”

EMS was called to the scene of the accident and provided medical assistance to Ramos for a bullet wound to his head.

“The investigation discovered that Ramos had been shot by a 13-year-old family member with a .22 caliber rifle,” Lucio said. “The 13-year-old had been shooting some birds when he shot Ramos.”

According to Lucio, the family member allegedly tripped while his finger was on the trigger, causing the firearm to discharge.

The sheriff said Ramos was transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center and was listed in critical condition. Swartz could not confirm the time of Ramos’ passing. Meanwhile, Lucio said he believes that there was no foul play involved in the incident. The case remains under investigation.
