Lady ’Hounds cruise past Weslaco East

Special to the NEWS

HoundsWESLACO – The San Benito Lady ’Hounds are on cruise control right now, and they’re not looking to tap the brakes anytime soon.

Behind another no-hitter from ace Amber Jasso, the softball Lady ’Hounds blanked Weslaco East 13-0 in five innings on Tuesday night to keep up their torrid pace.

The girls are now 15-1 on the season, including 5-0 in district, and are alone in first place in District 31-5A with three games left in the first round of the loop.

“We’re playing good defense, getting the timely hits right now and our pitching’s been superb,” San Benito coach Elias Martinez said. “We’re making the routine plays that are winning us ballgames so we like where we’re at right now.”

San Benito jumped on East from the onset, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding five more in the second. Already up 9-0, the Lady ’Hounds added two more in the third and fourth stanzas, respectively.

Perhaps just as impressive was the pitching performance of Jasso, evidenced by her dazzling performance against the Lady Wildcats. She walked only one batter, costing her a perfect game. For good measure, Jasso was also 2-for-2 at the plate.

Also, outfielder Dorothy Millan was 3-for-4 batting against the Lady Wildcats.

Already in the bag are solid district wins against McAllen Rowe (2-0) and PSJA North (10-0). The Lady ’Hounds must face McHi, PSJA (March 12) and Weslaco (March 19) to close out the first round.

“We’re 5-0 and so far so good,” Martinez said.

The game was the first since the Lady ’Hounds were recognized statewide as the 20th ranked team in Class 5A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. They were one of just three Valley teams to receive the weekly honor from the TGCA.

“That’s a tribute to our girls and our tradition,” Martinez said of the honor. “It’s for our girls that we have now and the ones that came before them. It’s all about tradition.”

Meanwhile, San Benito continues its district slate on Friday when it hosts McAllen High that night at Lady ’Hound Field and Martinez said the game figures to be a good measuring stick.

“We’ve got a big one at home against McHi,” he said. “That one will tell us a lot.”
