Sunny Glen Children’s Home will host its second annual 5k, 1 Mile Fun Run on Saturday, July 26.
The event’s theme is “Incredible Kidz.” Volunteer Sandra Rodriguez, who serves as Sunny Glen’s Community Relations Coordinator, said, “It’s more of a kid’s event. We’re focusing on kids’ health since we provide care for children.”
“Last year’s event went well,” said Rodriguez. “We had approximately 200 people. We’re looking forward to double those numbers this year.”
For kids of any age who wish to dress in costume, there will be a 1 Mile Fun Run. “Everyone should dress like a superhero; come in costume,” said Rodriguez. “Other kid events will be going on (after the race). There will be prizes and games for the children.”
First, second and third place trophies will be given to the winners of the 5k race. Additionally, every child who participates in the Fun Run will receive an award.
“Our kids are definitely looking forward to this event,” said Rodriguez. “Our kids and staff will be participating too.”
Sunny Glen Children’s Home serves approximately 20-25 kids and hosts multiple events throughout the year. The organization is always in need of volunteers. With school right around the corner, Rodriguez said, “We have tutoring programs for volunteers to come over once a week and spend time with the kids. We need volunteers to come tutor our children.”
Those interested in registering can do so at Footworks in Harlingen or at the Sunny Glen Children’s Home. Registration will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. the day of the event, and entry fees are as follows: $10 for children and $20 for adults. All proceeds go to benefit Sunny Glen Children’s Home.
Rodriguez said, “We look forward to inviting the community to come join us on Saturday.”
