If there’s one thing that signals football season is around the corner in San Benito, it’s the annual Greyhound football camp.

This year’s event is upon us and is slated to begin Monday, July 28 and will run through Thursday, July 31 at Bobby Morrow Stadium. The four-day camp runs from 8-10 a.m. each day and is put on by the Greyhound coaching staff aimed at incoming seventh, eighth and ninth grade athletes.

“It’s always an exciting time to be around the kids of our community and it’s a great opportunity to teach them some football,” San Benito head football coach/AD Dan Gomez said. “The camp is free and we encourage the kids to come out.”

Any athlete interested in participating can simply show up on Monday to get in the game. Registration is painless and can be done on the first day of camp, Gomez explained.

“They can just drive up and we’ll have coaches with registration forms to help get them registered,” he said. “It’s an easy process.”

Those athletes who will be playing football for Berta Cabaza, Miller Jordan or Riverside Middle schools as well as San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy will participate in drills and learning some of the basics of football leading up to the season.

“We’ll be teaching them fundamentals,” Gomez said. “You can’t get to the next level of any schemes without having knowledge of the basics.”

Meanwhile, Gomez said optimism and anxiousness are running high as everyone is chomping at the bit to get the season started. Preseason workouts for high school teams in Texas which did not hold spring football begin Aug. 4. The Greyhounds did participate in spring practices so they’ll hit the field for conditioning on Monday, Aug. 11.

“Everything’s been going great and our coaches have been in here working hard getting ready for the season,” Gomez said.

The ’Hounds will work for two weeks under new practice guidelines leading up to their lone  scrimmage at PSJA North on Friday, Aug. 22. The regular season debut takes place during Week One (there is no longer Week Zero) as the ’Hounds host Edinburg High on Aug. 29.
