The beginning of a new chapter in San Benito Greyhound football is here.

The ’Hounds hit the field for the first preseason workouts bright and early Monday morning as they prepare for the 2014 season under new head coach Dan Gomez and his staff.

Many teams began practices last week, however since they opted to hold workouts during the spring, teams like San Benito start a week later. Workouts will be held in the morning hours at San Benito High School but are not open to the public.

The varsity and junior varsity teams will work out at the high school while freshmen will practice at San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy.

San Benito will compete in the new District 32-6A, the largest classification in the UIL, along with familiar opponents including the Harlingen schools, Los Fresnos and Brownsville Veterans, Hanna, Lopez and Rivera.

Meanwhile, Greyhound fans wanting to get in on the action have one final opportunity to become season ticket holders for the 2014 season. On Tuesday, Aug. 12, the San Benito athletic department will sell tickets to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Bobby Morrow Stadium ticket office. Cash will be required for all ticket sales and tickets will be ready for pickup on Thursday, Aug. 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The athletic department will only be selling tickets to six home games against Edinburg High, McAllen Memorial, Los Fresnos, Harlingen, Brownsville Lopez and Brownsville Rivera. Each seat costs $42 for the six games. For more information, contact Yolanda Gonzalez, SBHS athletic department secretary at (956) 361-6587.
