Local businesses can embrace supportive services through the San Benito Economic Development Corporation’s Business Workshop from 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Aug. 26 at the San Benito Municipal Building.

This two-hour seminar will be hosted by the EDC with the intent of bettering and assisting local business. Normally, the corporation offers two specific types of assistance – a small business program in which direct loans are offered; and an incentive program in which grants and loans are available based on performance.

However, when other forms of assistance are required, the EDC refers businessowners to partner that specialize in forms of other financial options, business expansion and even in international trade. This workshop brings the references to the businesses and provides a chance “to encourage others to really take action,” said EDC Executive Director Salomon Torres.

“There is a good mix of topics,” Torres added.

In these two hours, the workshop will specifically discuss government contracts, starting and expanding business, international trade and financial assistance.

At least 30 prospective business professionals are expected to attend the seminar, and Torres hopes that he can provide them with the tools necessary to connect to programs geared towards success.

What the heck is going on at the Economic Development Corporation????

“*****”, my 5-star reliable source, informs me that the EDC Director, Mr. Salomon Torres, is recommending a projected $2.75 per hour salary increase for his Administrative Assistant who now has a new title to justify the salary increase.

Based on previous public documents, the hourly salary for the Administrative Assistant was $12.00 per hour in October 2012, $14.10 per hour in October 2013 plus an assistant to the Assistant, and now her salary is projected, if approved, to increase to $16.83 per hour on October 2014.

In just two years, the salary for the executive assistant will have increased from $24,960 to $35,000. That is roughly a 40% increase. Who else in the entire city gets that kind of salary increase?

What kind of financial stewards are approving these actions? What the heck???????

EDC has done nothing but spend, spend, and spend the taxpayer dollars. The EDC spent $385,000 for the funeral home and they are now spending another $450,000 to remodel the building.

When are the revenues going to start rolling in? Spend Show me the money!

Taxpayers can’t have the EDC just spend, spend, and spend without delivering something. Victor Garza and company need to be stopped or the EDC will spend their entire reserves, if they have any left. The EDC cannot depend only on sales tax revenues to replenish their reserves when sales tax revenues have so far remained stagnant on a year over year comparison.

All this spending and no revenues and What do taxpayers have to show for it???? Someone please tell me.

Seriously, this needs to be STOPPED

Hmmm. Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer: sound like you folks are disgruntled employees or have some sort of axe to grind with Mr. Torres. Or maybe just a shill for one of the politicians?? Your post reeks of politics. Shame on you.

Seriously, this is the best you can come up with to defend or justify the actions by the EDC? Nothing but accusations, assumptions, and animosity.

If you want to have a debate here stick to the narrative; which is the spending of taxpayer money.
