The San Benito CISD Parental Involvement Program will host its inaugural Back-to-School Picnic at the W.H. Heavin Memorial Amphitheater this weekend.

Slated from 6 to 8 p.m., the event is open to the public and promises free health screenings as well as college readiness, district information and community outreach booths. Free refreshments will also be provided for attendees.

According to SBCISD officials, staff members from the Parental Involvement Program are spearheading the event, specifically providing hot dogs, drinks and other refreshments as well as networking with other school district departments, the City of San Benito and the local business community to operate various booths.

Parental Involvement Program Director Luis Gonzales anticipates that such efforts will produce a successful picnic that will grow to be an annual event in San Benito.

“Hopefully it’s something that we can expand on for next year,” Gonzales said, adding, “It came about because – after we just picked our brains at the end of the year – we wanted to decide what we could do the next year that would be something different. One of the things that we saw is that some campuses would have end-of-the-year picnics.”

Among the SBCISD departments that have expressed interest in participating are the Food and Nutrition and Special Education departments. Gonzales further noted that the City will have representation on-hand from the local police and fire departments as well as members of the business community.

“Having the fire and police departments out there showing their equipment will be good for the kids to experience,” Gonzales said. “This event is to bring families together and spend some time with the residents of San Benito.”

Gonzales said some refreshments, such as the hot dogs, will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
