McALLEN – Jose Ignacio Acosta, a 42-year-old resident alien from Mexico residing in San Benito, has been ordered to federal prison following his conviction of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine, announced U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson.

Acosta previously pleaded guilty to coordinating the transportation of 24 kilograms of cocaine to Mobile, Ala., on Nov. 8, 2014, and attempting to deliver seven kilograms of cocaine on March 1, 2013.

On Tuesday, Sept. 30, U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez accepted the guilty plea and ordered Acosta to federal prison for 140 months – more than 11 years. In handing down the sentence, Judge Alvarez took into consideration that Acosta was an organizer in these transactions and was coordinating the trafficking of these drugs out of his residence in San Benito.

Acosta, who has been in custody since his arrest on Jan. 15, will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and FBI investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Juan F. Alanis is prosecuting the case.
