After being MIA for two weeks, The Download is back with two thoughts for the weekend: The correct pronunciation of Puig, and Thanksgiving.

Before Mike and I had a chance to hear from lone finalist for superintendent Dr. Marc A Puig himself, there was some debate over how his name is pronounced.

We ran through ‘Pewig,’ ‘Pu-wig,” “Puhwig” and a few others as we tried to figure out how to not butcher his name. After all, not many of us want to get the new superintendent’s name wrong when we greet him. That leads to awkwardness either way, because: A.) Either he has to correct you; or B.) He is left in that position of wanting to correct the pronunciation of his name, but trying to remain polite. Then there is always the awkwardness of having to ask someone how their name is pronounced. Luckily, your friends at the San Benito News have gone through the awkwardness for you.

It’s pronounced “Pwig,” with a ‘W’ sound after the P.

Believe it or not, we asked around a bit, but it wasn’t until we talked with some of the school district board members and Dr. Puig himself that we were able to confirm the pronunciation. Glad we got it before I had to meet him in person.

Now, about Thanksgiving. A little-known fact about me is that I am vegan. I don’t consume or use anything derived from animals. That can become a bit difficult over the Thanksgiving holiday. Actually, it can be hard year-round — we live in a state where barbecue is taken almost as seriously as football.

I found this cool little resource at Oh She Glows: www.ohsheglows.com/categories/recipes-2/holiday/holiday-thanksgiving.

Those who don’t have a soy allergy and have limited cooking time can check out the Tofurky Feast. Unfortunately, the closest location I’ve seen it available is in McAllen. If you don’t mind the drive, it’s well worth picking up a box, which includes the Tofurky roast, gravy, rice and breadcrumb stuffing, Tofurky jerky “Wishstix” and a fudge brownie.

I’m out — writing this made me hungry.

Happy Thanksgiving!
