Martin “Toby” Salazar III

McALLEN/SAN BENITO, TX. – Martin Salazar III, died Thursday, November 27, 2014 at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg. He was 59.

Toby was born on August 22, 1955 in San Benito to his parents, Martin, Jr. and Irma A. Salazar. As a child, he served as an altar boy at St. Theresa Catholic Church in San Benito. Graduating from San Benito High School, he went on to earn his degree at Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas. When he relocated to McAllen, Martin became affiliated with the Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Throughout his career, which spanned over 38 years, Martin taught, coached, and inspired his students at Taft High School, Hidalgo High School, La Joya High School, P.S.J.A. Memorial High School, and Edinburg North High School, spending his last nine years at Mission High School.

Coaching sports and doting on his daughter and grandson were some of Toby’s favorite things to do. He was an avid sports fan and his favorite teams were the Oakland Raiders, Boston Celtics, and Houston Astros. He loved watching “Jeopardy” on TV, and enjoyed listening to his music; Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Robin Trower, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

His father, Martin Salazar, Jr.; twin daughters, Amanda and Kandace Salazar; and his grandparents, precede him in death.

Survivors include his wife Rebecca; daughter, Robin A. Ramos (Robert); son, Gabriel Reyna; grandsons, Oliver Martin Ramos and Jacob A. Diaz-Reyna; mother, Irma A. Salazar; sisters, Elia Saenz and Marisela Garza, and aunt, Dolores Salazar. Also surviving Mr. Salazar are his numerous nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation will be held between the hours of 1:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. today, Sunday, November 30, 2014, with a recitation of the holy rosary scheduled for seven o’clock this evening within the San Benito Funeral Home Chapel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 1, 2014 at ten o’clock in the morning in St. Theresa Catholic Church, 1300 Combes Street, San Benito, Texas 78586. Committal services will then follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.

Pallbearers will be Robin Ramos, Michael Garza, Riley Garza, Gabriel Reyna, Reuben Trigo, and Robert Ramos. Alberto Salinas, Walter Patterson, Rene Flores, Mario Pena, and the Mission Coaching Staff will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Martin loved his fellow coaches and students. Special thanks to the MICU medical staff at the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance of Edinburg, and to Dr. Jesus A. Zavaleta, Jr.
