San Benito will have a little extra reason to celebrate this Christmas as the Rev Eugene Cañas is set to return to his hometown to celebrate his 50th year in the priesthood. At 6 p.m. on Dec. 26, the public is invited to join with him and his family in celebrating a Mass of thanksgiving at St. Benedict Catholic Church.

Rev. Cañas, the oldest son of 12 children, grew up in the Resaca City and says he hadn’t given any thought to joining the priesthood until a priest spoke at his school. “A priest came by the school there telling us about the foreign missions and asked us how many wanted to go, or wanted to join, so I raised my hand,” he said.
