Museum waiting game continues

The fate of the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum has hung in the air for the past seven years, and after Tuesday’s city commission meeting, it appears a resolution may be near.

The commission heard discussion from several individuals, including museum committee member Rey Avila, City Manager Manuel Lara, and others in an attempt to parse through options to the construction location dilemma. A 2007 certificate of obligation (CO) provides $1.2 million for renovations and construction, but carries a stipulation that funds must be applied at the Plaza San Benito location at 220 E. Stenger St. That stipulation puts the kibosh on plans to include the museum in the ResacaWalk project where the city hopes to create retail, cultural, and public spaces in one unified location.
