Each year, as has long been the tradition at the San Benito News, we run a scrooge piece calling out those who have earned themselves a top spot on our naughty list. This year is no different. I’ve only been here for a few months, and Christmas was last week. Still, that doesn’t mean we don’t have a few scrooges on our list.

Without further ado, here are this year’s scrooges:

San Benito City Attorney Ricardo Morado takes the number one spot this year. Morado repeatedly dodged the News, and rarely responded to our calls. One of the few times he did, he left us with a sound bite that has become a favorite at the office: “Because the law allows it.” This was after being asked why the city and its legal counsel refuse to speak on matters regarding the City’s (ongoing) water plant fiasco. The only time I ever heard back was to receive a canned statement with his name on it. Thank you, sir. You’ve been a valuable source of information.

Next on the list are the folks to continue to steal the newspaper from the racks. Unfortunately, we don’t know who you are, but it definitely hurts the paper. We’ve mentioned this time and time again, but it will fall on deaf ears. Those responsible don’t seem to care, but we hope that someone out there does enough to report any such activity if they happen to see it.

Then, there are the web commenters who like to throw hateful or bigoted comments around behind the security of their computer screen. I’ve read plenty of racist and homophobic screeds, many of which are moderated and filtered out before they ever make it to the website. We do our best to ensure that these do not slip through the cracks, but the site’s system isn’t perfect. I call them the keyboard warriors.

Of course I’m not going to focus strictly on the negative. There is plenty of good. For instance, Victor Tamayo of the Rio Hondo Police Department who served as interim chief as the city looked for a replacement for former chief Weldon Matlock. Thank you, sir, for reaching out to us and being willing to talk despite the fact that we may not have started on the best note.

Also very willing to talk has been Assistant Chief of Operations for San Benito Police Department Michael Galvan. When the San Benito News calls looking for information, Galvan makes sure that he gets it to us, or finds someone who can. And a thumbs up to you.

Of course there are many who help us with information every day. We appreciate all of it, so thank you all.

Keeping with the positive notes, I’m sure many of our readers have noticed that the San Benito News has a new look. It’s something I’d been contemplating for some time. It took a few months of thought, planning and designing, but we came up with something I think our readers will enjoy.

There are still changes ahead for the News, but those will take time. Redesigning the logo was a first step, and served to give the newspaper a fresh look just in time for 2015. Just as many of the city’s entities have planned for the upcoming year, the crew here has been doing the same for your newspaper.

Thank you all for being a part of it.
