Up until yesterday, if you said the Lady ‘Hounds were the best team in the state, it would have to be considered an opinion. Well, now it’s a fact.
The Texas Girls Coaches Association released the latest high school softball rankings on Tuesday morning, listing San Benito at the top of the charts, the highest ranking by any other team in Rio Grande Valley history.
And it all started last Saturday when the Lady ‘Hounds were facing elimination against a stout San Antonio O’Connor club.
The San Benito Lady ’Hounds pulled off a resounding 8-1 win in Game 2 and then prevailed 8-4 in Game 3 to oust the Panthers, earning a spot to the Elite 8 for the second time in three seasons.
Overall, this is the third trip to the Region-IV final for the Lady ’Hounds, the only Rio Grande Valley school to reach the softball Elite 8. Their maiden voyage came in 2011 and their second was in 2013 via victory over O’Connor.
