Hope For Liam- 6-month old baby fights rare disease

Six months ago, Julissa Cerda went home after giving birth to her second child and first son. Earlier this week, that child came home for the first time. Due to a very rare genetic syndrome, Liam Garza had to spend the first six months of his life under extreme care while having an artificial tube plugged into his heart to keep him alive.
Although MMIHS is an incredibly rare disease that only affects an average of 1 in 1,000,000 children, this is the second time Cerda has had to deal with the agony of seeing her child kept alive by machines. MMIHS, or Megacystis microcolon intestinal hypoperistalsis syndrome, is the most severe form of functional intestinal obstruction in a newborn. “It basically paralyzes the stomach so there is no movement or digestion,” said Cerda.
