A former San Benito High School graduate died early this morning while working as a deputy for Madison County in Tennessee. Rosemary Vela, 24, was in a one car crash at about 2 a.m. today while responding to a call for backup from another officer, Madison County Sheriff’s Department confirmed.
According to Tom Mapes, the Madison County Public Information Officer, Vela was working the midnight shift when she crashed. “There was heavy rain and I believe she just lost control of the car and ended up hitting a tree,” he said. “She was a good one… we’re all really grieving the loss this morning.”
Vela had just joined the force less than six months ago. She leaves behind a 5-year-old son.
Vela graduated from SBHS in 2009.
