San Benito City Officials declined to return about a third of the $1.4 million in grant money appropriated for the construction of a new museum Monday night at a special meeting.
“We’ve spent too much money already on this project and we’ve been paying interest since receiving the grant,” Mayor Celeste Sanchez said Monday night.
A representative group, including the curator of the Conjunto Music Hall of Fame Rey Avila and the San Benito Historical Society, put forth the monetary requisition in hopes of freeing them from a legally binding stipulation that the new museum must be constructed at the Plaza of San Benito.
