Many people are surprised to see John Chambers’ name still on the ballot for Cameron County Sheriff. That’s because Chambers, the former Chief of Police of Indian Lake, was found guilty on 14 counts of tampering with government records earlier this month and at his sentencing hearing on Thursday, a judge gave him five years of probation. However, because Chambers is appealing the ruling, he remains eligible for the March elections.
Although the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement would be forced to revoke Chambers’ law enforcement license because of the conviction, the former police chief noted that his license can’t legally be revoked until the conviction became final if his appeal was denied. Despite all the controversy surrounding him, Chambers maintains his innocence and offered up his theory on why he was even being charged in the first place.

Mr. Chambers, I sincerely hope you have deep pockets in your effort to become elected to the position of Sheriff. Why on earth would anyone else provide monetary support to a soon to be finally convicted individual. Theory? No, evidence and confidence in the system of justice.
