Autism reportedly affects one in 68 children at birth.  The statistics are so alarming that awareness events can be seen throughout cities across the Nation during April, which is Autism Awareness Month.  But there’s another birth disorder that doesn’t get as much attention and awareness, and according to one local mother, it needs to.  “This month is not only Autism Awareness Month, but it’s actually Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Awareness Month as well,” said local mother Isabel De La Cruz, whose son Rory De La Cruz was diagnosed with the rare disorder when he was born last year in August.  “As soon as he was born they noticed he wasn’t breathing right and immediately took him to the NICU and incubated him. After a few X-rays they noticed the birth defect.  I was in shock.  I had the most perfect pregnancy and all my sonograms were normal.  I cried for a brief moment and then my motherly instincts kicked in and I knew I had to be strong for my son and husband,” she added.
