At the age of five, most kids don’t have a care in the world as they prepare to start school for the first time. As for SBHS senior Valeria Serna, she was merely worried about how she would fit in after coming to the United States without knowing a word of English, or what to expect from her new environment.

A short 13 years later, Serna has defied all odds by not only graduating high school, but doing so with a 3.89 GPA and as a member of the National Technical Honor Society.

As a testament to her incredible journey and hard work, Serna has also been named the 2016 recipient of the San Benito News Scholarship.

Serna has one of the most impressive high school resumes you might ever come across. In addition to her place in the National Technical Honor Society, Serna was the President of the Business Professionals of America, the Vice President of the Robotics Club, a representative for the Health Occupations Students of America, as well as being a member of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society.
