Just when it looked like San Benito was set to welcome mud racing to the lower Valley, it appears as if that dream has been put to rest- for now at least. Less than two months after presenting his initial plan to the City Commission, Henry Thomae now says it seems “highly unlikely that anything will get done with the current stipulations.”
Thomae gave his initial presentation to the City on April 19 and was told that although the they liked his proposal, they would need more details on the project before moving forward. The 52-year-old businessman says he then proceeded to go to every length to make sure he had the necessary documents.
“I went out and got an LLC, I got an architect to go measure everything and draw up what we would be doing, I put together a full business plan for them,” said Thomae. “It must have been over 50 pages of documents that I took to the city commission… I spent a few thousand dollars putting everything together.”
According to Thomae, he was then put on the city commission agenda for this past Tuesday. The following day, he received a fax from City Manager Manuel De La Rosa asking for “unobtainable stipulations,” according to Thomae.
“They wanted a $10 million insurance policy, which is more than I had ever seen for any mud racing track,” said Thomae. “I called every insurance company I could think of and they all laughed at the idea of that much insurance. All motorsports companies have $1 million insurance policies and they’re asking me for 10 times that.”
