Summer vacation is officially over for most Greyhound athletes as San Benito’s annual strength and conditioning program is in full swing. Over 200 athletes from all sports, including girl’s athletics, are taking part in the daily 2-hour training sessions.
In past years, the strength and conditioning program had been reserved for football players, but third year head coach Dan Gomez prefers a more universal approach that benefits every sport across the board.

“It’s always good to have this many student athletes showing up to voluntary workouts,” said Gomez. “We want to get these kids in shape and ready to go for whatever sport they’re competing in.”
The athletes are divided into two groups, one outside group and one inside group, and then go through a cycle of stations. Each station is designed to work a different muscle group. According to UIL rules, football drills are not permitted yet, so coaches are focusing solely on conditioning the athletes.
The annual Greyhound football camp is scheduled for July 25, and varsity football practice is slated to kick off on August 1
