San Benito police have reported that a 65-year-old disabled man was allegedly assaulted and robbed by the same people he was trying to help.

According to a San Benito Police Department press release, 53-year-old Eduardo Reyes Valladares of San Benito was arrested on the 1000 block of West Business 77 on Monday, January 21, for numerous outstanding municipal court warrants for unpaid city taxes, totaling approximately $2,307.70.

Authorities said that, at the time, investigators for the SBPD happened to be in the process of obtaining an additional warrant for his arrest in regards to allegedly assaulting and robbing the 65-year-old man on Wednesday, January 2, at an apartment complex located on the 600 block of North Sam Houston Boulevard.

“The 65-year-old male claims that he was assaulted and robbed by a couple who lived in the same apartment complex as him,” said SBPD Detective Rogelio Banda, Jr. “Apparently, out of kindness, he went out there and offered them food and medication, but the couple told him that they could use money instead.”

The victim allegedly refused, and while walking back to his apartment Valladares allegedly assaulted him and took his money.

“Apparently, they pushed the 65-year-old man,” Banda said. “The thing is he is a disabled individual. He suffers from some kind of speech impediment. That’s what made matters worse for the suspect. He received enhanced charges because of the fact that the victim is disabled and elderly.”

According to Banda, the victim did not know who the suspects were, but he was able to identify the Valladares through a photo lineup. A warrant of arrest was obtained and Valladares was arraigned by Justice of the Peace David Garza, who set the suspect’s bond at $30,000.

In the meantime, Banda said investigators are currently in the process of locating Valladares’ girlfriend, whom investigators believe was allegedly involved in the robbery.

  1. What a scumbag to stoop that low to do that to Robert Days.
I remember many many years ago he would dance by himself if you asked him to in front of a crowd.
He had some crazy funny moves and he enjoyed making you laugh.
