After his first year as the girls head basketball coach at San Benito High School, Abel Moreno decided that he wanted to get a basketball camp started to spark interest in basketball among the incoming girls.

“Eventually we want to build the program to be as good as the softball program,” said Moreno. “I believe we have the athletes, we just need to get them interested in the sport and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
Running from this past Monday through Thursday, the inaugural camp under Moreno saw a little over 30 kids register, a number Moreno hopes only increases in the future. “I know there are a lot of other activities going on this summer and we just kind of got started with this camp, so we’re hoping as the word spreads about this camp that we can get more girls out here,” said the first year basketball coach.
