A San Benito man was placed under arrest Monday evening just several minutes after being struck by a vehicle.
According to witnesses at the scene, a Maroon, late model Mitsubishi Eclipse was exiting the parking lot of the Harley Davidson motorcycle shop and struck the “older” man, who was riding against traffic on a red, Mongoose bicycle.
The man sustained a head injury and was bleeding when paramedics arrived but he refused transport, police said.
“Paramedics looked at him but he refused to go to the hospital,” said Assistant Police Chief Michael Galvan. “He was then placed in handcuffs for being highly intoxicated.”
The driver of the vehicle stopped and rendered aid and was questioned but released on his own recognizance with no charges expected.
“When your riding a bicycle, the law is you obey the laws of the road,” Galvan said, noting that the man was arrested for public intoxication as there is no charge for “biking while intoxicated.”
